Many people love volcanoes, but few would love to face the extreme heat on their own. However, Kina and Martin, a French couple, are different. Over the past few decades, they had followed volcanic eruptions, getting very close to dangerous hot lava(岩浆)and gases, and taking their discoveries with amazing photos.HC9九科教学网

The couple met by chance at the University of Strasbourg in the 1960s, and soon they became close because of their shared love for volcanoes. After graduating, they focused on studying volcanoes even though they didn’t have any extra money to support their work. They traveled with limited money and a deep love for the beauty of volcanoes.HC9九科教学网

Their journey was filled with risk (风险)and excitement. To get valuable first-hand information, they put their lives in danger by facing the heat and falling rocks, getting closer to danger than anyone else. As a result, they took close photos of many volcanoes erupting, like the At Umari Volcano and the Cape Columbia Volcano. These wonderful photos caught the attention of local govemments, who later supported the couple with money to visit hundreds, or even thousands, of volcanoes around the world.HC9九科教学网

In June 1991, along with 40 other people, the couple went to record the eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan. Sadly, Kina and Martin lost their lives while researching volcanic activity to warn people in the area to evacuate. Later, it was found that their bodies were nearest to the center of volcano.HC9九科教学网

In 2022, their story was turned into a film called Fire of Love by Sara Dosa, a prize-winning director. One viewer commented, “I was amazed by the couple’s achievement. All of this was done before drones(无人机), which are used today to study volcanoes, were created.”HC9九科教学网

D. They were not afraid of danger and ready to take risks.HC9九科教学网

A. They recorded their journey to make a film.HC9九科教学网

B. They asked for money from the government.HC9九科教学网

C. They tried to warn and save lives during volcanic activity.HC9九科教学网

D. They got closer to the At Umari Volcano than anyone else.HC9九科教学网

26. What can be guessed from the last paragraph?HC9九科教学网

A recent study has shown an interesting finding: more men, instead of women, are choosing to adopt(领养)adult cats. This discovery goes against the common belief that cats are mainly loved by women, while dogs are seen as the loyal(忠诚的)friends of men. The study shows a big difference between men and women when it comes to choosing pets to adopt. Over the past four years, 1.5 million men have welcomed the joy of having adult cats as their family, while only1 million women have done so.HC9九科教学网

The strong relation between a man and his furry(毛茸茸的)friend is clear from the study’s findings. While little cats may be cute and playful, there are good reasons why men might prefer adult cats, especially if they want a loyal and fun pet. Unlike taking care of a little cat, which can be hard work, adult cats already have their own personalities. This means that people can enjoy the company of a cat with clear behavior right away. Adopting an adult cat gives you company right away without needing as much care as a little cat. This makes them a great choice for men who have busy schedules or don’t have much time for pet training. Adult cats already know how to use the litter box and have basic feeding habits, which is perfect for busy people.HC9九科教学网

Michael Bellingham, the head of UK Pet Food, said he was surprised by the growing number of men adopting older cats. “This year’s research looks at how pets can have a big effect on our lives, from helping us feel less lonely to making us happier. One-fifth of the people with mental(心理的)health problems we interviewed wanted pets to be included in prescriptions, as they can help treat their problems.”HC9九科教学网

So, for men who are thinking about getting a furry friend, adopting an adult cat might be the best choice. It gives you a pet that doesn’t need as much care and can also help with your mental health, making it a good deal for both the owner and the pet.HC9九科教学网

28. What can be learned about the recent study in paragraph 1?HC9九科教学网

A. Many families benefit from caring for pets.HC9九科教学网

B. Women enjoy being surrounded by cute cats.HC9九科教学网

C. Dogs have always been men’s most loyal friends.HC9九科教学网

D. Men prefer to adopt adult cats compared to women.HC9九科教学网

29. According to the study’s finding, why do men choose to adopt adult cats?HC9九科教学网

B. They can take care of their owners.HC9九科教学网

C. They have fully developed personalities. HC9九科教学网

Math is everywhere in our life, from working out the bill after dinner to your personal costs. While some people enjoy solving math problems, many others are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and feel really anxious. It might seem discouraging, but this “math anxiety” is quite common, and you’re far from being the only one who feels this way. Besides, our worries and fears don’t always show how able we are.HC9九科教学网

The reason for this problem often begins to appear in our childhood at school. Studies have shown that math teachers who feel nervous about teaching the subject can pass their anxiety to their students, and girls might be more affected by this anxiety. According to the Program for International Student Assessment, around31% of 15 and 16-year-olds in 34 countries said that they felt very nervous when solving math problems, 33% said they got nervous doing math homework, and nearly60% worried that math classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University’s Questrom School of Business, told the BBC that providing students, especially girls, with good role models “is important, especially at a young age.” She believes the key is to have people, especially women who love teaching math, educate younger kids.HC9九科教学网

David Robson, writing for BBC Future, mentioned, “It’s unclear why math causes so much fear compared to other subjects like geography. But knowing there’s a right or wrong answer might make you more anxious about not doing well.”HC9九科教学网

And if we believe that we’re not “math people”, we may question about ourselves and avoid solving problems that we could deal with.HC9九科教学网

Researchers have been trying to work out why mental math can make us nervous. This fear might come from all kinds of sources, but some suggest that openly expressing your fears can weaken their control on you and encourage children to see math tests as challenges rather than threat(威胁). We need to have a positive view on math and give it another try.HC9九科教学网

32. What’s the main idea of paragraph 2?HC9九科教学网

A. Girls are better at math than boys.HC9九科教学网

B. Math classes are difficult for everyone.HC9九科教学网

C. Students’ anxiety only comes from teachers.HC9九科教学网

D. Math anxiety in childhood affect students’ confidence.HC9九科教学网

33. What might happen if someone believes they’re not a “math person”?HC9九科教学网

A. They will study math harder.    B. They will doubt their abilities.HC9九科教学网

C. They will face challenges bravely.   D. They won’t see math as a threat.HC9九科教学网

34. According to the last paragraph, what are children advised to do?HC9九科教学网

A. Find the reasons of math fear positively.HC9九科教学网

B. Give up challenges to avoid anxiety actively.HC9九科教学网

C. Speak out their fears for improvement bravely.HC9九科教学网

D. Examine the reasons for math failure carefully.HC9九科教学网

35. What might be the best title of the passage?HC9九科教学网

A. Math Anxiety: How to Fix It?HC9九科教学网

B. Math Application: How to use Math?HC9九科教学网

C. Math Learning: The Key to Success in All Fields.HC9九科教学网

D. Math Competition: Race between Boys and Girls.HC9九科教学网

“If Mom finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble.” I thought to myself.HC9九科教学网

I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk in a relaxed way into the kitchen. As I was walking toward the back door, Mom asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going?” I answered back at once, “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I let out a big sigh(长舒一口气). My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running toward the bus stop at top speed.HC9九科教学网

After half an hour, I was at the beach looking around for my friends Jimmy and Bobby in the crowd. Some children were running and laughing, while some were building sandcastles. In the sea water not far from the beach, a couple of young men were racing in the canoes(独木舟), their shouts and cheers filling the air. A moment later, I found Jimmy and Bobby, who were playing beach volleyball. I ran toward them and got into my swimming trunks(泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.HC9九科教学网

Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide(潮水)came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore(岸). I wanted to show off my swimming skills, so I offered to help get the ball for them.HC9九科教学网

I jumped into the water and started swimming at a steady (稳定的)speed. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired. But when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I sped up. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong tide swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, my feet caught on some sea grass and I could not swim properly.HC9九科教学网

I tried to keep afloat(漂浮的)but it was no use. “If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,” I thought silently.HC9九科教学网
