Four Great National Parks in Kenya
Sibiloi National Park
Established in 1973 by the government of Kenya for the protection of wildlife, it covers about 1,570 km². Since the national park is near Lake Turkana, one can see a large collection of ocean life — over 350 species — and abundant wild life in the area. Sibiloi is also home to important archaeological (考古的) sites, including Koobi Fora where the fossil remains have contributed more to the understanding of human evolution than any other site on the continent.
Maasai Mara
Maasai Mara was originally established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary (保护区). Now the total area under conservation in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem amounts to almost 1,510 km². The Maasai Mara is home to one of the most amazing wonders of the world. Millions of people come to the park between July and October to see wildebeests migrate (迁徙).
Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park
The name of this park was established in 1967 and it is situated 65 km north of Nairobi. It covers only20.7 km². If you want to do some bird-watching together with a sample of wildlife like buffalos, leopards, baboons, and mongooses, then this is the place for you! It’s particularly attractive for hikers or families wanting some freedom and exercise, outside their vehicles.
Meru National Park
Meru National Park, established in 1966, is located east of Meru, 350km from Nairobi. Covering an area of 870.44 km², it’s one of the best-known national parks in Kenya. Rainfall in this area is abundant, with 635-762mm in the west of the park and 305-356 mm in the east. After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. “He was not so keen on heights as I was,” she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider at the age of 80. Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free. Thompson did her second paragliding when she turned 85, and raised nearly 2,000 pounds for a local charity.
Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said: “Any age, as long as you’ re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diplomas (文凭) in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils on her books. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say: Isn’t getting old awful? I say: No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.”
“People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.” Thompson added.
4. What might inspire Thompson to try paragliding at he age of 80?
A. Her love for nature. B. Her husband’s encouragement.
C. Her long-held desire for it. D. Her wish to overcome her fear of ageing.
5. How did Thompson feel during her first paragliding?
A. Free. B. Scared. C. Nervous. D. Uncomfortable.
6. Which of the following can best describe Thompson?
A. humble and brave. B. honest and considerate.
C. passionate and selfless. D. day-dreaming and adventurous.
7. How does Thompson view the risks brought by paragliding?
A. She believes they don’t exist. B. She accepts whatever may happen.
C. They add to the pleasure of paragliding. D. They prevent her from enjoying paragliding.

Have you ever been betrayed by someone close to you and decided that you would never forgive them? Actually speaking, forgiving others can be one of the hardest things to do.
When others hurt us, the pain can drive our decisions and actions. Our self-esteem is wounded, and our defensive walls rise to protect us from more pain. The last thing we want to do is forgive the person who caused our spiritual and emotional ache.
We may feel as if forgiving others makes us look weak. And we may feel that we are letting the person who hurt us off the hook, and that they should also suffer and be punished. We tell ourselves that strong people don’t forgive those who have hurt or offended them. “You got me once, but never again.” We may fear that if we do forgive, they will hurt us again or that others will think less of us for doing so.
Actually, staying in the past stops us from living in the present and planning for the future. We keep looking at the rearview mirror, seeing the person who has hurt us. But forgiving others is a courageous act. It means we take the higher moral road. When we allow ourselves to forgive others, we free ourselves from the pain, anger and bitterness that only make matters worse.
And though it is hard to achieve, we must remember that we are only humans and so are those who have hurt us. When we are on the other side and have hurt others, we will need their forgiveness and kindness.
8. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. What we want to do when betrayed. B. What the result of hurting others is.
C. Why it is hard for us to forgive others. D. How we feel when hurt by others.
9. How many reasons does the author give to show it’s hard to forgive?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
10. Why does the author mention “rearview mirror” in the fourth paragraph?
A. To stress the importance of safe driving. B. To convince us not to stay in the past.
C. To remind us to see person hurting us. D. To show forgiveness can free us from pain.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To talk about the benefits of forgiveness.
B. To claim we can punish those taking advantage of us.
C. To persuade us to stop feeling angry for an betrayal.
D. To explain that we should always forgive when hurt.

A new study published in Cell reports that a mosquito’s (蚊子) sense of smell is more complicated than thought. And it may explain how this insect is so good at seeking you out and so on.
Meg Younger, a neuroscientist at Boston University, is co-author of the study. When I visited her lab, she introduced me to her subjects, opening up one of the large cubes set to 80 degrees. Each is filled with100-plus mosquitoes.
Younger places one of the mosquito-filled cubes on a lab bench, and breathes out gently into it. Meeting the carbon dioxide, the insects go wild for other cues, like the complex blend of human body odor (气味)—that’s magnetic to a mosquito.
This attraction isn’t merely a nuisance (麻烦事) for humans worldwide. So scientists have attempted to break it. But try as they might, it’s been frustratingly hard to find chemical means of battling mosquitoes.
By looking into the mosquito’s brain to work out how it smells its surroundings, Younger and her colleagues have taken steps to do just that.
Most of what they know about the neuroscience of smell comes from mice and fruit flies, where the wiring’s fairly simple. Each neuron (神经元) in the nose or antenna has one kind of receptor that detects a single kind of odor—say , a banana. And all the neurons with receptors for the banana smell connect to the same part of the brain.
However, in case of mosquitoes, it doesn’t work. Younger and the others started searching inside mosquito brains, finding that each neuron there has multiple receptors that can detect multiple odors.
The finding that a mosquito’s sense of smell is organized differently than expected may explain why its ability to sniff people out isn’t so easy to break. It gives the insect a kind of built-in redundancy (复置装置) in the system. Because humans all smell different, mosquitoes may rely on this redundancy to broaden their target of what a person smells like.
This work could give researchers additional ways to prevent the bugs, like developing traps that contain new fragrance blends that are more attractive than people.
12 What might be the author’s job?
A. An interviewer. B. A driver. C. A librarian. D. A dentist.
13. What does the underlined “it” refer to in the fourth paragraph?
A. The attraction of mixed smell from human. B. The draw of carbon dioxide.
C. The appeal of human body odor. D. The use of Chemical means.
14. What difficulty do the scientists have in the study?
A. They hardly know about neuroscience. B. They cann’t locate mosquitoes’ brain.
C. They want the theory of neuroscience. D. They are facing a new project.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the study?
A. Negative B. Helpful C. Doubtful D. Inspiring

I was busily preparing for our Saturday night barbecue(烧烤), a weekly tradition that brought our family together. Suddenly, our daughter Rikki stormed in through the front door, her face clouded with anger. Without a word, she marched straight to her room, leaving me with a sense of anxiety.
I looked out of the window and saw her classmate Lexi walking away sadly. My mother’s intuition(直觉) told me that this situation might need some gentle guidance. So I called Rikki out to the kitchen, hoping to start a conversation about what had happened.
Rikki stood before me with a stubborn look on her face, the kind that kids get when they know they’ve done something wrong but are too proud to admit it. “I noticed that Lexi came over, but she didn’t stay long,” I said gently. “She’s your age and goes to the same school as you. Why doesn’t she stay longer?”
Rikki said, “I don’t like her, I wish she would stop coming over here all the time. She dresses terrible, and sometimes she doesn’t smell good.”
I sighed and said, “That’s not her fault, Rikki. Maybe she doesn’t have anyone to help her with things like that. Some kids don’t have the extra things that you and your friends have. But that doesn’t make the many less worthy than you. Everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.”
Rikki nodded but her expression didn’t change. Her father had been watching from the backyard where he was grilling(烧烤). He didn’t like the way Rikki had treated Lexi, so he decided to take action, He came over to me and said “Let’s go and see Lexi.” Then he called Rikki over and asked her to get in the car. Together we drove straight to Lexis house.
